چکیده

Previous attempts at disturbing the galactic disk by the Magellanic Clouds relied on direct tidal forcing. However, by allowing the halo to actively respond rather than remain a rigid contributor to the rotation curve, the Clouds may produce a wake in the halo which then distorts the disk. Recent work reported here suggests that the Magellanic Clouds use this mechanism to produce disk distortions su cient to account for both the radial location, position angle and sign of the HI warp and observed anomalies in stellar kinematics towards the galactic anticenter and LSR motion. Tracing the Magellanic Clouds Back in Time

A solution is presented for the past motions of the Magellanic Clouds, the Milky Way galaxy, and the Andromeda Nebula, fitted to the measured velocities of the Clouds and M31, under some simplifying assumptions. The galaxies are modeled as isolated bodies back to redshift about 10, when their velocities relative to the general expansion of the universe were small, consistent with the gravitatio...

ORFEUS II echelle spectra: H2 measurements in the Magellanic Clouds

More than 20 years after the Copernicus satellite, ORFEUS allows the investigation of molecular hydrogen (H2) in the diffuse interstellar medium by way of FUV absorption spectroscopy once again. This time, targets in the Magellanic Clouds were also observed, allowing the first investigation of cold H2 in a metal-poor environment outside the Milky Way disk. This paper presents new H2 measurement...

Asymptotic giant branch evolution and its impact on the chemical evolution of the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds

The asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase of stellar evolution is common to most stars of low and intermediate mass. Most of the carbon and nitrogen in the Universe is produced by AGB stars. The final fate of the AGB envelopes are represented by planetary nebulae (PN). By studying PN abundances and compare them with the yields of stellar evolution is possible to quantify carbon and nitrogen produ...

Absorption Line Studies in the Halo

Significant progress has been made over the last few years to explore the gaseous halo of the Milky Way by way of absorption spectroscopy. I review recent results on absorption line studies in the halo using various instruments, such as the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer, the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, and others. The new studies imply that the infall of lowmetallicity gas, t...

Ultraviolet Dust Grain Properites in Starburst Galaxies: Evidence from Radiative Transfer Modeling and Local Group Extinction Curves

This paper summarizes the evidence of the ultraviolet properties of dust grains found in starburst galaxies. Observations of starburst galaxies clearly show that the 2175 Å feature is weak or absent. This can be the result of radiative transfer effects (mixing the dust and stars) or due to dust grains which do not have this feature. Spherical DIRTY radiative transfer models imply that it is not...
